If substations are the heart of the utility system, transmission lines are the arteries, and they are outside, exposed to the elements. The weather, time of day, wind, load, distance, geometry of the various components and other factors plays an important role in when and how to get repeatable and accurate temperatures so that utility management can make critical decisions about whether, when and how to take a line out of service.
